Welcome to the realm of conscious self-healing. Living in the era of Alvin Toffler’s third wave has much deeper impact than the social scientist himself could calculate.
Truth be told he expressed it wholeheartedly that the time is upon us when meaning making perspectives will be lost amidst the social culture boosted by the revolutionary third wave. To understand what these cards are offering let’s take the Toffler route to our current state of being in the collective reality of the world.
Toffler a hated man among contemporary social scientist and a revered advisors for as many as five state presidents classified human social development on the timeline into following categories on the timeline starting at the event horizon of the modern society as we know it today.
Starting with what is dubbed as the start of agricultural society, at different points in time (10,000 - 8,000 BCE) for different corners of the world, the first wave ended the neolithic hunter-gathered society and started shaping the modern society as we know it today. Life was simple as it was for a long time until the second wave swept through the planet.
The industrial revolution marked to have started in 1760 AD ushered the human society into the a new era of socio-economic changes that paved way for the modern society that came to be after what we would like to call the Limbo period (1914 onwards) until the rise of computers, internet and the dot com bubble.
Although Alvin Toffler marks the year 1950 AD as the start of third wave, the date cannot be unanimously applied to the planet as a whole. The Limbo period can be marked to start from 1914 AD up until the impact of computer, internet and dot com bubble hit the country or place in question. These dates will vary from country to country starting from 1950 AD.
Culture shock is defined as: “Loneliness, anxiety, confusion, and distress experienced by individuals or groups when they encounter or are exposed to a new or unfamiliar cultural environment or otherwise experience radical cultural change.” For example, a student of Filipino descent studying at an American university may experience culture shock, as may a businessperson traveling abroad.
The cultural future shock as Toffler explains: ”future shock” is derived from the rapid transformation of society’s structures due to an accelerated rate of technological and social change. It’s the psychological state of individuals and entire societies to adapt to a continual state of change. This rate of change outstrips our ability to process and adapt, leading to a sense of disorientation and confusion.”
Sounds familiar? Isn’t that what Toffler explained in 1970 AD exactly where stand today in the evolution of human society. A new tiktok trend, a new instagram trend, a new mobile application going viral like threads did recently, snapping away our life moments to share in streak with our friends and family, isn’t it all now and here? Bingo!
